Gangs and police clash again in Haiti

On Monday, gangs controlling much of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, initiated an attack, leading to clashes with police in the city center.

Reports from local sources indicate that gunfire erupted in the vicinity of Champ de Mars, a significant public park near the National Palace, the former presidential residence.

According to the Miami Herald, at least four police officers were wounded during the confrontation.

Haiti has been without a president since the assassination of Jovenel Moise in 2021, and there is currently no sitting parliament. The country's last election took place in 2016.

For decades, Haiti has grappled with poverty, natural disasters, political instability, and gang violence, exacerbating the challenges faced by its populace.

Since late February, powerful gangs in Haiti have joined forces, launching attacks on police stations, prisons, the airport, and the seaport in an effort to oust Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Despite being unelected and facing public disapproval, Henry announced on March 11 that he would step down to allow for the formation of a transitional council.

However, three weeks later, the council has yet to be established and installed due to disagreements among political parties and other stakeholders regarding the selection of the next prime minister and uncertainties regarding the legality of such a council.

In a statement issued on Monday, Henry's office cited constitutional constraints, stating that Haiti's constitution does not permit the formation of such a body.

The statement also mentioned that Henry is seeking guidance from CARICOM, the Caribbean regional body overseeing the urgent transition process.

Meanwhile, gang violence persists, exacerbating an already severe humanitarian crisis characterized by shortages of food, medicine, and other essential supplies. The people of Haiti continue to endure dire circumstances as the nation grapples with ongoing instability and violence.
