"The Witcher" returns with Liam Hemsworth in a freshly revamped season
The highly anticipated return of Netflix's fantasy series "The Witcher" is set for Thursday, marking the debut of a new lead actor, Liam Hemsworth, who takes over the iconic role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill. After more than two years off the air, the series embraces a fresh tone and perspective.
Based on the works of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, "The Witcher" follows monster hunter Geralt as he navigates the dangers of a fantasy realm known as the Continent. Hemsworth expressed his awareness of the passionate fan base surrounding the character, stating, "It wasn't lost on me that there's a massive, passionate fan base that really care about this character and this world." As a fan himself, he aims to honor the legacy of the series while bringing his own interpretation to the role.
The new season aims to balance Hemsworth's "dry sense of humor" with "super dark moments," according to creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. She noted that the show feels like a refresh, with Hemsworth's energy influencing its overall aesthetic and tone.
In this fourth season, Geralt embarks on a journey with new companions after being separated from Princess Ciri and sorceress Yennefer. The cast also includes Laurence Fishburne, who joins as vampire Regis. Fishburne, new to the fantasy genre, was attracted to the series due to its diverse casting, noting that it reflects "the world that we all live in."
Filming for season four occurred simultaneously with the fifth and final season, which will adapt Sapkowski's remaining novels: "Baptism of Fire," "The Tower of the Swallow," and "Lady of the Lake." Fans can expect an engaging continuation of the story as the series evolves with its new direction.
