Having "never known anything oelse" than his powerful corrective lenses, he explains that it helps him to refocus.
For instance, in the 2015 boxing film "Southpaw," the actor "removed his lenses to force himself to listen more carefully" when the police announces to his character the death of his wife.
Though the actor does not always wear glasses in his films, such as in "Road House," his character will wear a pair in "Presumed Innocent," in reference to his godfather Paul Newman, who wore glasses frequently.
