The cult horror parody franchise "Scary Movie" is getting a 6th sequel in 2025, more than 20 years after the release of its first installment

More than 20 years after the release of its first installment, the cult horror film parody franchise "Scary Movie" will have a sequel expected to hit theaters in 2025.

As announced by Paramount at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, a sixth installment of the saga is in the works and will begin filming in the fall.

For now, the cast of this sequel has not yet been revealed. Paramount, which has partnered with Miramax - the studio that launched the saga in 2000 - for this project, has also not announced a release date, but the film is expected to hit theaters in 2025, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Launched by Keenen Ivory Wayans in 2000, the "Scary Movie" franchise has since spawned five successful films that have grossed over $818 million worldwide at the box office.

The saga, which parodies the horror genre, notably featured actresses Anna Faris (Cindy) and Regina Hall (Brenda). However, despite the excitement, the last three installments of the saga received harsh criticism due to the decline in their parodic quality. So it remains to be seen if this new "Scary Movie" will live up to audience expectations.

It's amusing to note that the names of the characters in Scary Movie often have a resemblance to the names of the actors in the film "Scream," which they parody. For example, the first name of the heroine, Cindy Campbell, is similar to Sidney, the heroine of Scream, while her last name, Campbell, references the last name of Neve Campbell, the actress who portrays Sidney on screen. The same goes for the character Drew Becker, parodying the character Casey Becker played on screen by actress Drew Barrymore, whose first name is used in the parody.
