Apple will soon allow the downloading of iOS applications from websites in Europe

Apple recently announced a major revolution for downloading applications on iOS in Europe. The company confirmed that it will soon allow the downloading of iOS applications from websites, a significant change that will, however, be subject to certain strict rules.

This decision follows other recent changes, such as the approval of sideloading in January and the launch of iOS 17.4. Apple responded to criticism by confirming that starting in spring 2024, developers will be able to distribute their applications directly from a website, without going through the App Store. This approach will be similar to macOS, where it is already possible to install software in this way, or to Android with .apk files.

However, this new policy will only apply to applications in the EU, and developers will have to follow Apple's strict rules. Apps offered via web distribution will need to meet notarization requirements to protect the platform's integrity, and can only be installed from a website domain registered in App Store Connect.

Despite this appearance of increased freedom, the path remains complex for developers wishing to break free from the App Store, and Apple continues to highlight potential security risks. Developers will have to meet strict criteria, such as being registered in the Apple Developer program as an organization established, domiciled, or registered in the EU, or being a member of the program for at least two consecutive years, with more than one million first-time installations annually on iOS in the EU.

For users, installing applications outside of the App Store (sideloading) will be relatively simple, but they will need to approve the developer in their iPhone settings. When installing an application, a record will show the information submitted by developers to Apple for review, such as the application name, developer name, description, or screenshots. This new policy is expected to be implemented with a system update in the coming weeks, thus offering a new freedom to iOS users in Europe.
