PlayStation integrates cutting-edge technology to add scents to gaming experiences
Sony has unveiled an innovative gaming system that aims to enhance the gaming experience by allowing PlayStation players to smell their way through games like 'The Last of Us'.
This new system, known as the 'Future Immersive Entertainment Concept', was introduced at the CES 2025 tech showcase, accompanied by a trailer showcasing its capabilities.
The concept features a large, room-sized installation with video screens on every wall. In the trailer, gamers experience 'Naughty Dog’s' classic title with added elements such as new audio and scents, creating a "completely new experience" that goes beyond traditional gameplay.
This immersive setup is designed to elevate players' engagement by incorporating sensory elements, making them feel even more connected to the game world.
“One of the pillars of Sony’s creative entertainment vision is the idea of narrative everywhere, where stories from Sony are transformed across new and exciting mediums,” explains the video.
“This Future Immersive Entertainment Concept aims to explore these possibilities. This proof-of-concept project combines the latest location-based technologies, Sony Crystal LED panels, engaging audio, haptics, scent and atmospherics to fully immerse you into the world of the story.”
In addition to the ability to smell the world of 'The Last of Us', the trailer showcases players using a torch that illuminates specific areas within the game. While Sony has not disclosed its future plans for this technology, similar 4D experiences have already been implemented in theme parks and cinemas. Notably, the company filed a patent for "smell-o-vision" in 2023, following the launch of the DualSense controller, which enhances gameplay through audio and vibrations.
In a related history, back in 2013, Microsoft developed a scent-emitting controller for the Xbox One, and a decade later, it introduced the "world’s first pizza-scented Xbox controllers" to celebrate the release of the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' film.
As for the Future Immersive Entertainment Concept, there are currently no release plans. However, fans of 'The Last of Us' can look forward to the HBO adaptation's second season, set to premiere in April, with a new teaser trailer hinting at significant emotional moments.
In other gaming news, an 'Elden Ring' player has committed to facing one of the toughest bosses from the upcoming 'Shadow of the Erdtree' every day until the release of the spin-off 'Nightreign', which is expected sometime in 2025. No specific release date has been announced yet.
