Emotional Performance by Singer Tom Jones for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day where he performed the song "Give Your Hands to Struggle: The Evolution of a Freedom Fighter."
Invited to the D-Day commemorations in Ver-sur-Mer, in Calvados, the British singer Tom Jones, who turned 84 on June 7th, delivered a poignant performance of the song "I Won’t Crumble With You If You ,Fall" in the presence of King Charles III and the French President Emmanuel Macron.
The British singer performed this anthem-like piece, which is featured on Tom Jones' album "Surrounded by Time," released in April 2021. It is actually a cover of the eponymous song by African American activist Bernice Johnson Reagon, originally appearing on her 1975 album "Give Your Hands to Struggle: The Evolution of a Freedom Fighter."
Other artists also performed during this ceremony, attended by British veterans. Actor Martin Freeman read a letter from a soldier who participated in the D-Day landings, concluding with, "I want to pay tribute to those who did not survive. May they rest in peace."
King Charles III spoke in both French and English, also paying a heartfelt tribute to the soldiers "who never came home." The King, whose mother, Queen Elizabeth, contributed to the war effort as a mechanic, quoted the words of his grandfather, King George VI, who reigned during that time.
The ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-Day in Normandy brought together several prestigious guests, including veterans, leaders, and representatives from various allied countries. Among them were French President Emmanuel Macron, who gave a speech honoring the fallen soldiers, and US President Joe Biden, who participated via a video message, expressing the nation's gratitude for the soldiers' sacrifice. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, along with representatives from the Canadian and Australian governments, were also present to honor the memory of the combatants.
