Signs of dehydration in infants

Dehydration: an explanation:

Dehydration occurs when there is a significant loss of water and mineral salts in the body.

This situation often arises after an episode of acute diarrhea linked to a gastrointestinal infection of viral origin.

Dr. Jean-Louis Chabernaud warns of the serious consequences of dehydration, especially in babies under six months, which can even be life-threatening.

Each year in France, about fifty deaths are attributable to dehydration, and it is frequently associated with visits to the emergency room and hospitalizations.

Causes of dehydration:

The main cause of dehydration in infants is acute diarrhea. However, it can also be triggered by high fever, insufficient fluid intake, or food poisoning.

Escherichia coli bacteria can also cause severe diarrhea with vomiting.

Periods of high heat can also contribute to water loss in the body. It is therefore crucial to keep children well hydrated during heat waves.
