Anthropic Set to Release Claude 3.5 Opus Soon
Anthropic is preparing to launch Claude 3.5 Opus soon, as revealed by CEO Dario Amodei in a recent Lex Fridman podcast episode. This announcement follows the July releases of Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.5 Haiku. However, Anthropic had not released an upgrade for its most advanced model, Opus, which led to speculation in the AI community about its potential redundancy.
In response to Fridman’s question about the Opus 3.5 release, Amodei confirmed that while he couldn't provide an exact release date, the plan remains to launch Claude 3.5 Opus. He explained that the focus for now is to enhance the capabilities of the existing models. According to Amodei, Sonnet 3.5, while considered the “middle child” among the models, offers more power than Opus 3 and is priced the same as Sonnet 3. He also stated that Haiku 3.5, the smallest model, is as powerful as Opus 3.
According to Analytics India Magazine, Amodei emphasized that the goal is to "shift the curve" in model development, with Opus 3.5 expected to come at a later stage. He also discussed the reasons for the delay, including the need for significant computational power during pre-training, extensive safety testing, and a desire to create a new version of Opus that can address emerging challenges and offer even greater value. Despite the delay, Anthropic continues to explore ways to scale its models.
Recently, Anthropic has also been active in rolling out new features. Their Computer Use feature has sparked significant interest, potentially transforming human-computer interaction. Additionally, they introduced a Visual PDF tool that enables Claude to analyze and provide insights into PDF documents, including images, charts, and graphs.
With OpenAI preparing to release GPT-4 Turbo in the coming days and Google gearing up for the launch of Gemini 2.0 by the end of the year, the competition among flagship AI models is intensifying.
