Microsoft unveils the 'Reflect' app, a tool for teachers to foster emotional engagement with students

In the rapidly evolving technology landscape, Microsoft has taken a proactive step to support the mental health of students and teachers with the introduction of its new Reflect app.

This application, available for download from the Microsoft Store via a valid Microsoft school account, aims to foster connections, expression, and overall well-being within educational settings.

The Microsoft Reflect app has already been accessible through the web, Microsoft Teams, and OneNote Class Notebook. With the launch of the standalone app, users can now experience the full suite of features and information previously available through web browsers, but with the added benefits of clearer navigation and quicker access.

This development is particularly significant, as it allows students to seamlessly integrate well-being practices into their daily digital tools used within the classroom environment.

According to Windows Report, the Reflect app employs a unique approach to understanding the emotional landscape of a classroom, utilizing check-ins that educators can initiate.

Through these check-ins, teachers are able to assess how both students and staff feel about various subjects and topics. These check-ins go beyond traditional surveys, as they foster interaction and engagement, with respondents able to express their emotions through the use of emojis or the Feelings Monster.

The Feelings Monster, which is backed by research, showcases 60 different emotions. This feature helps students communicate their feelings more easily and effectively.

The insights gathered from these check-ins are invaluable for teachers, as they can identify areas of achievement as well as areas that require additional attention and support.

This Microsoft app not only helps track the emotional landscape of a classroom, but also actively motivates users to engage in "brain breaks" – a selected variety of activities aimed at supporting mental fitness. These include breathing exercises, movement tasks, guided videos on mindfulness, audio meditations, as well as the addition of focus music tracks, soundscapes, short podcasts, and games.

This diverse offering ensures that users can always find an engaging way to refresh and refocus.

Moreover, Microsoft has demonstrated a commitment to continuously improving the Reflect platform, as evidenced by its frequent updates. One notable enhancement has been the integration with various Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Canvas and Google Classroom, making it easier for teachers to incorporate Reflect into their existing digital systems.
