Metallica takes live music to new heights with upcoming VR experience, featuring iconic tracks from the 'M72' tour

Metallica has announced an exciting new venture into the world of virtual reality with an immersive concert film. In collaboration with Apple, the band has developed a VR experience compatible with the Apple Vision Pro, set to launch on March 14.

The film, simply titled Metallica, features footage from the band’s recent M72 tour, which celebrated the release of their latest album, 72 Seasons.

The footage was captured during their final performance in Mexico City last year and includes full renditions of iconic tracks like “Enter Sandman,” “Whiplash,” and “One.”

This immersive experience showcases ultra-high-resolution 180-degree video and spatial audio, making it as close to a live concert as possible.

To enhance the experience, the filming utilized advanced technology, including cable-suspended cameras and stabilised remote-controlled camera dolly systems placed on stage, allowing viewers to feel as though they are right in the band's “Snake Pit.”

In addition to the VR concert film, Metallica is also releasing a new EP titled 'Metallica Live from Mexico City,' featuring spatial audio, which will also be available on Friday.

Drummer Lars Ulrich shared his excitement about the project during a discussion with Zane Lowe at SXSW, noting how thrilling it was to experience the filming and editing processes.

He described the sensation of wearing the VR headset and being able to look around while listening to the audio as "just fucking crazy."

This innovative collaboration marks a significant step for Metallica as they continue to explore new ways to engage with their fans.
