Conducted in Finland, this six-week randomized controlled trial involved 102 healthy men who were asked to maintain their regular eating habits while incorporating either meat or beans into their meals,according yo Eating Well.
The results showed that participants who added beans to their diet experienced more weight loss compared to those who continued eating meat. On average, the bean group lost about 2 pounds, while the meat group lost only 0.5 pounds. Surprisingly, the bean eaters consumed roughly 240 more calories per day than the meat eaters, suggesting that calorie reduction was not the main factor behind the weight loss.
Researchers attribute the improved outcomes largely to the higher fiber content in legumes. Fiber not only promotes a feeling of fullness but also supports digestion and metabolic health. Additionally, the bean group saw notable improvements in their LDL cholesterol levels, which is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. This indicates potential cardiovascular benefits beyond just weight management.
Despite these positive effects, the study did note a small decrease in vitamin B12 levels among those who consumed fewer animal products. However, overall nutritional intake remained sufficient, meaning participants were still getting most of the nutrients they needed.
