MTV Video Music Awards 2022:Lizzo, Taylor Swift and Lil Nas X were among the stars to impress on a red carpet dominated by dark hues, exposed midriffs and gender-fluid menswear
Sunday night saw the start of the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, with celebrities including Lizzo and Blackpink on the red carpet.
In contrast to Hollywood's award shows, the VMAs frequently feature attendees having a good time and showcasing their individuality by favoring informal attire like playful, sexy, or creative clothing over traditional attire like suits and ball gowns. Also making fashion history here were Lady Gaga's iconic meat dress from 2010 and Lil' Kim's one-sleeved purple jumpsuit with seashell nipple pastie from 1999.
At the event this year, hosted by Jack Harlow and LL Cool J and held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, artists like Bad Bunny and Nicki Minaj performed.
Many celebrities wore dark colors to match the "black carpet" this year, but they added color or fetishwear-inspired accents to their looks, like Dove Cameron's thick leather necklace or Sabrina Carpenter's rainbow decorations.
Ashley Graham, Tate McRae, and Jennie of Blackpink were just a few of the stars that dared to expose their midriffs. Meanwhile, Anitta and Victoria de Angelis of Maneskin seemed to pay homage to Lil' Kim's renowned 1999 VMAs ensemble with chic coverings.
The men of the evening also flashed some of their torsos. Conan Gray billowed past in a Harris Reed outfit with lace trim, while Bob the Drag Queen danced in a white skirt that he paired with a plaid blazer and waistcoat. These gender-fluid design trends added a softness to the masculine ensembles. Maneskin's Ethan Torchio was wearing a sheer corset.
