Shakira makes surprise Coachella cameo with bizarrap, highlighting diverse slate of Latino artists

Shakira made a surprise appearance at Coachella on Friday night alongside Argentine superstar producer Bizarrap, creating a buzz on the festival's first day, which featured a diverse lineup of Latino artists.

In contrast, Lana Del Rey made a grand entrance at the festival's opening night, arriving with a motorcycle escort to headline the event, marking the start of the summer concert season in California's desert.

Despite speculation, Taylor Swift, currently on a break from her blockbuster tour, did not make an appearance onstage. However, fans speculated she might join Lana Del Rey or Sabrina Carpenter, leaving the possibility open for future performances during the festival.

Lana Del Rey delivered a captivating performance, showcasing her unique style of ethereal pop while wearing dazzling knee-high boots and a mini dress. Although Swift didn't join her onstage, Del Rey delighted the crowd by inviting Billie Eilish and Jon Batiste to perform with her.

The day also featured an array of Latin acts, with Shakira and Bizarrap's collaboration stealing the show and marking the announcement of Shakira's upcoming global tour. This Latin presence at Coachella reflects the growing trend of Latin music dominating global charts.

Other standout performances included Peso Pluma's fusion of traditional Mexican music with Latin rap and reggaeton, as well as Young Miko's energetic set blending Spanglish bars with Latin trap. Cuban artist Cimafunk electrified the crowd with his Afro-Cuban funk, becoming the first Cuban-born artist to perform at Coachella.

The festival also welcomed Japan's virtual singer Hatsune Miku, who mesmerized fans with trippy visuals and a live band. This diverse lineup sets the stage for headliners Tyler, the Creator, and Doja Cat on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, with indie rock nostalgia featuring prominently in the weekend's lineup.

Additionally, Saturday will see a reunion of No Doubt, led by Gwen Stefani, for the first time in about 15 years. Meanwhile, Vampire Weekend returns to the desert after more than a decade, ensuring a weekend filled with music and nostalgia at Coachella 2024.
