SAG-AFTRA files complaint over AI use in Fortnite's Darth Vader voice recreation

The actor union SAG-AFTRA has filed a complaint regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate the voice of Darth Vader in Fortnite.

The union claims that Llama Productions, a subsidiary of Epic Games, opted to "replace the work of human performers with AI technology" without informing the union or negotiating terms.

SAG-AFTRA's complaint, submitted to the US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), alleges that the company unilaterally changed employment terms by utilizing AI-generated voices, failing to bargain in good faith.

In Fortnite, players can engage with Darth Vader, recruit him, and interact through AI.

Epic Games announced that the AI voice recreation of Darth Vader would not have been possible without the agreement of the estate of James Earl Jones, the late actor who originally voiced the character.

Jones's family expressed hope that this collaboration would allow fans of all ages to enjoy Darth Vader.

SAG-AFTRA emphasized the importance of protecting actors' rights to negotiate terms regarding the digital use of their voices, particularly those who previously voiced Darth Vader in video games.

The complaint reflects growing concerns among video game and voice actors about AI potentially reducing job opportunities or replacing them entirely.

Hollywood actors, including Scarlett Johansson, have also raised alarms about how generative AI could manipulate their digital likenesses.

Since strikes began last year, SAG-AFTRA has been working to secure agreements on rights and protections for video game voice actors.

Voice actors associated with SAG-AFTRA have been refusing to work with major companies like Activision, Disney, Warner Bros, and EA over issues related to generative AI, including the use of digital replicas.

There are also concerns about the potential misuse of AI technology; reports indicate that Fortnite players have found ways to make Darth Vader's character curse in voice chats.
